RETAINING GOD’S HELP David the psalmist speaking concerning Zion said, “God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early” (Psalm 46:5). When God’s help comes, it makes you immovable. Apart from that, God’s help comes right early, it is never late. What that means is, before your need arises the supplies will be waiting. Before trouble comes knocking on your door, God will send you help. He will help you right early! Your problems and needs will die prematurely. There will be no delays, you will not suffer any embarrassment or intimidations! It also means that before challenges come your way, God would have shown you how to triumph over them.
In 2 Chronicles 26, there is the story of a king called Uziah. He was sixteen years old when he began to reign in Israel and he reigned fifty two years. Among other achievements, he invented engines in Israel and also made bulwarks to shoot arrows and great stones. All his enemies were subdued under him and his name spread far abroad. And all this was made possible because “he was marvellously helped, till he was strong” (2 Chron 26:15). The word marvelous means indescribable. To marvel is to wonder or be astonished at the excellent qualities of a thing. When you enjoy the marvelous help of God people would be wondering, “How did it happen?” You also will tell them, “I can’t tell how it happened.”
Do you know how to enjoy such help? Remain small in your own eyes because no matter your height in life, you can never outgrow the help of God. Never! Look at what the Bible says concerning Uzziah in 2 Chron 26:16. “But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God…” When Uzziah became successful, he no longer had regard for God. He began to do things disorderly; he went into the temple to burn incense on the altar, which was not his duty but the duty of the priests. And for that, the Lord smote him with leprosy and he died a leper. Even at his death, he was not buried among the other kings of Israel that had gone before him, because his heart was lifted up (2 Chron. 26:17-21). May your heart not be lifted up to your destruction. Remember Nebuchadnezzar? When his heart was lifted in pride he was driven off the throne into the bush (Daniel 4:30-33). This is the undoing of many people today; the moment they see some little money they start praising themselves.
The help of God is reserved for the humble. So, never look at your blessing and begin to beat your chest, nor look at your achievements and kiss your feasibility studies. Don’t look for any man to thank for your progress, always give God all the glory! When you see His blessings in your life, kneel down before Him and thank Him.
Meditate on these: Malachi 2:1-2, Deut. 8:12-14
